Luberon Villages
The Luberon massif presents a lot of exceptional villages remarkably
set in the surrounding countryside.
Most have been built in the middle-ages, in the beginning of the 12th century,
and perched in the mountains for defensive necessities.
The population was then grouped around the castles inside the ramparts that
protected them both from possible attacks and from the plain swamps : Menerbes,
Bonnieux .
Later on, villages settled in the plains on communication lines, Lourmarin
for example.
Both offer enchanting architectural walks with many ancient monuments from
the middle ages to the 19th century : castles, fountains, churches.
It's a real pleasure to wander in the little cobbled streets admiring the
houses which are very well preserved and restored.
By driving through the Luberon you can admire the very beautiful countryside
with extraordinary sites like the impressive Buoux and its high cliffs,
a famous place for climbers , or some wonderful stone constructions "bories" made by shepherds and farmers
with the stones they found in the fields.
