Antique Remains
The Provence is a region that combines
art and history. Many elements remind us of the historical heritage of
the old Roman civilization.
Vaison-la-Romaine is located in the Haut Vaucluse. Its historical
site reveals Gallo-Roman homes in all their splendor: marble, mosaics,
statues, atriums and private baths.
In Orange the Roman civilization is represented by the majestically
3 arches Arch of Triumph and the famous antique Theater: the most beautiful
and the best conserved of the whole antique world.
An other important city in the Roman empire was Arles. The arena,
still in use for bullfights, the antique theater, the Alyscamps burial
grounds are all Roman monuments that should be seen.
Nimes is situated not far from Arles. Centuries of Roman life have
left an exceptional heritage in this city. The arena has nearly the same
proportions as the one in Arles.
An old temple, now called “La Maison Carrée” (the square
house), is an example of the Greek influence on the Roman architecture.
Saint Rémy-de-Provence is famous for its old rich
city of Glanum, entirely destroyed by the invasions of Barbarians, except
for two splendid monuments: a Mausoleum and an Arch.
Together they are called: “The Antiques”. These cities are the most famous
and best known of the ancient remains in Provence, but all around, many
other monuments show us traces of the old civilization: bridges, aqueducts,
sarcophagus...
If you are interested in this subject we can organize for you an “ancient
round trip” through Provence.
